Artist’s Statement

 

An illustration from a children's book on the Solar System is combined with one of the first images sent back to Earth from NASA's Mars InSight Lander in November 2018. This piece was inspired by the music and collage work of Grant Hart (1961-2017). In the documentary "Every Everything: The Music, Life & Times of Grant Hart", Hart stated that he appreciated working on classic cars because it required precision, which he said was different from his approach to many other projects. My tendency is the opposite: I usually choose projects that require precision and detail, so for this project I thought it would be fitting to attempt a collage method used by Hart that was looser, faster, and more spontaneous.
