"My Keenness for Winter"

Watercolor on Arches Paper

Artist’s Statement

Having lived most of my adult life above the 45th Parallel, I have come to think of there being 5 seasons in the year…the 5th being the Season of Long Nights. It is those long nights of winter that allow more reflective hours, as river ice reveals the flow beneath its surface. Childhood memories of winter’s nights play repeatedly over in my mind’s eye…my mother’s fingers picking the notes from her guitar’s strings as she enshrouded herself from the noise of the work day. Now it is I who can, in the words of the poet, Janeen Pergrin Rastall, “live winter-shrouded.” “It is the stillness I love…”
